Eight of Swords tarot card meaning

Eight of Swords is a card of the suit of Swords, one of the four suits of the minor arcana in the tarot.

Eight of Swords

Keywords

Upright

A figure stands bound and blindfolded, surrounded by eight swords planted loosely in the ground, open space visible between every blade. The cage looks total, but it isn't — the ropes are loose enough to slip and the gaps between the swords are wide enough to walk through. This card names the trap built by your own thinking, the one that feels inescapable only because you haven't checked how solid the walls actually are.

Reversed

Reversed, the blindfold finally comes off — you see the gaps that were always there, and the sense of being trapped starts to loosen its grip. It can also mean staying tangled in the ropes a little longer out of familiarity or fear. The exit is available either way; the question is whether you're ready to trust it.

In love

In love, the Eight of Swords describes feeling stuck in a dynamic that seems unchangeable — but look closely at which restrictions are real and which are assumptions you stopped questioning. Naming one option out loud is often enough to loosen the ropes.

At work

At work, this card points to a job or situation that feels boxed in, though the walls may be more self-built than official. Ask a direct question or explore a door you've assumed is locked before accepting the cage as permanent.

With money

Financially, you may feel boxed into one option when others exist just outside your current line of sight. The restriction is partly real and partly a story about what's possible — check both.

For health

For health, this card can describe the mental cage of a diagnosis or limitation feeling bigger than it is — anxiety adding bars that aren't structurally there. Ask what's medically true versus what fear has added on top.

Spiritually

Spiritually, the Eight of Swords is the prison built entirely of belief — the story that you have no choices, told so often it started to feel like fact. Removing the blindfold is itself the spiritual work here.

In general

Overall, this is a card of self-imposed restriction — a trap that feels absolute but has more gaps than you've allowed yourself to see. Test one boundary before accepting all of them.
